In this article, we explore the path to personal transformation through two key concepts bearing the seeds of profound change: disruption and rupture, and how they lead to transformation and growth, in a journey that often involves navigating challenging terrain, facing uncomfortable truths, and making difficult choices.
Disruption: Shaking the Foundations
Disruption, in the context of personal growth, refers to challenging the status quo within your own life. It starts with recognizing the habits, beliefs, and behaviors that no longer serve you. Are there thoughts or stories you tell yourself that hold you back? Maybe you believe you’re not good enough, not smart enough, or not worthy of love.
It may seem obvious that one would be aware of these familiar and perhaps detrimental ways but it requires some intention to become conscious of them, to become more aware. It may also take an accident or a serious illness but we don’t have to wait for a seismic event to occur in our lives to initiate change. A good starting point can be the introduction of some meditative practice in our lives. It gives us space and time to look within and see what is playing out, what is repeating, what are the fears, how we react to triggers, to discomfort, and how we avoid or fight the people or situations that cause us to feel that vulnerability that we are trying to hide because we don’t know how to embrace it, not able to recognize that this is precisely a golden seed for growing into stronger and more at peace…
Disrupting these beliefs requires questioning their validity and actively replacing them with more empowering ones. This means taking action. Stepping out of the comfort zone. Taking action again, and again until we break free…
The Rupture: Breaking Free from the Past
Rupture signifies a significant break from your past experiences, relationships, or ways of being. It’s a moment of profound change that can feel like a loss but also an opportunity for liberation. This might involve ending toxic relationships that drain your energy, undermine your self-esteem, or perpetuate unhealthy patterns. If you’re stuck in a career that makes you miserable, it might mean leaving a job that doesn’t fulfill you. It means letting go of past traumas. Healing from past traumas can be a long and difficult journey but it’s essential for creating a brighter future. Rupture might involve seeking therapy, practicing self-compassion, and consciously choosing to release the pain of the past.
Rupture can be painful at first but during this process of disruption and rupture, it is important to remember some fundamental laws. These are: the principle that nothing stays the same, ever… What feels unbearable today will one day be looked at from a completely different place, it will have been transmuted into more compassion, greater strength, and wisdom that will enable us to live more fully, freer, and perhaps help others in navigating their journey.
Another empowering principle to keep in mind is the neuroplastic nature of the brain, this capacity that the nervous cells of the brain have to create new connections to support learning and adaptation. The compounding effects of cultivating a certain quality of thoughts and taking action again and again in line with those thoughts transform the abilities of the brain to make the journey along the path of these thoughts/actions easier and easier. Keeping this in mind helps us to feel the outcome embodying itself every day a little bit more within us through our diligent action. It is an empowering process.
Transformation: Embracing an Evolved You
The process of transformation and growth, initiated by coming into awareness, and taking consistent actions to disrupt the unconscious patterns of thoughts, emotions, and behaviors, eventually allows the emergence of a transformed mind, physiology, and circumstances. This is the outcome of disruption and rupture.
The attributes of the re-engineered, evolved self are a more compassionate attitude to life (towards self and others), a commitment to deepening self-awareness through, journaling, seeking inspiration from introspection, and perhaps also the ability to lean into intuition and an expanded sense of consciousness, taking feedback from life itself – something that Buddhism calls “the actual proof” (the unfolding of life being recognized as the ultimate validator – as opposed to the ever swinging and often misleading opinions of society).
Transformation is an ongoing process of living with intention and presence. It requires courage, resilience, and a willingness to embrace change. It is challenging but certainly not as much as living under the diktat of a tyrannical mind afraid of uncertainty. The rewards of initiating our transformation towards growth are immeasurable – a life filled with greater joy, purpose, and fulfillment. Embracing the disruption, navigating the rupture with acceptance, vision, and resilience, and celebrating the transformation, truly pave the way for a better life.
